Estimation of Noise in the Image

  • The processing of images without extra user interaction is becoming more and more important
  • Reasons for this are
    • Low skill of user in the field of image processing
    • The need of running machines without a controling user
  • Therefore, the image processing library has to offer more and more methods to automatically determine parameters

  • One further step in this direction is the automatic determination of noise

:: Automatic noise level determination can be used in various areas:
   - determine the quality of a camera
   - determine the quality of a frame grabber
   - determine current noise level of the camera depending on the current settings, such as gain, offset
   - determine parameter for image processing operators like the minimum contrast of edge filters
   - determine the amplitude of a noise-like texture in the image

:: The determined value can be used to
   - inform the user about the current status of the system continuously
   - automatically adapt the parameters of image processing methods
   - quality assurance of the production process
