Common Use Cases

Use this overview to find the tool for counting objects. Keep in mind that tools in other categories might also provide results that can be used for counting, e.g., the parameter "Number of Accepted Regions" in Evaluate Regions.

Task	Tool	Usage
Count objects in images with back light.	Count in Back Light	Count objects of a similar area in images with back light and return them as regions. If you want to return the position of the objects, use the tool Locate in Back Light.
Count objects with similar brightness.	Count Objects with Similar Gray Values	Count objects with similar gray values, i.e., objects that have a similar brightness and return them as regions. To check if objects are present at a specific location, use the tool Check Presence with Gray Features. If you want to return the position of the objects, use the tool Locate Objects with Similar Gray Values.
Count objects on a non-uniform background.	Count on Non-Uniform Background	Count objects on a non-uniform background and return them as regions. This tool can be a useful alternative to preprocessing an image with tools of the category Filter prior to using a tool of the category "Counting".
Count objects using a deep-learning-based approach	Count with Deep Learning	Count objects in different orientations and scaling using a deep learning model. To find and count the desired objects, you first need to train the deep learning model. You have to define at least one reference object for the counting and adjust the training parameters as required to find the objects in different orientations and scaling. Optionally, you can specify objects that should be excluded from the counting. After the training, the deep learning model will be able to find and count the objects in the search images.
Count objects with similar shapes.	Count with Matching	Count objects with similar shapes or gray value relations and return them as regions. To check if objects are present at specific locations, use the tool Check Presence with Gray Features. To locate objects with similar shapes, use the tool Locate with Matching.
