Precise camera and system calibration

3D Calibration

3D calibration establishes the relationship between a camera and the corresponding object. In robotics, it also defines the relationship between the robot and the camera.
This results in a unique and accurate description of area or line-scan cameras: A set of internal and external camera parameters maps image coordinates precisely to world coordinates.

MVTec software includes an extensive collection of operators and calibration assistants to determine these parameters. For calibration, images from pinhole cameras, telecentric surface cameras, hypercentric lenses, and line-scan cameras can be used.

Calibration Functions

MVTec software offers a range of tools for precise camera and system calibration.

Self-Calibration of rotating cameras and lens distortions.

Lens Distortion Correction for images, contours, and points.

Transformation of Contours and Points (camera coordinates → world coordinate).

Image Correction to remove lens and perspective distortions.

Hand-Eye Calibration to determine the spatial relationship between the camera and robot.

Highest Accuracy

Calibration is crucial for achieving the highest possible accuracy in industrial image processing.

MVTec software enables fast and easy calibration of cameras and imaging setups. With a powerful collection of operators and precisely crafted calibration plates, lens distortions can be reliably removed, and objects can be measured in world coordinates.

Multi-Image 3D Camera Calibration

By capturing multiple images of a calibration plate placed randomly within the camera's field of view, a unique and precise 3D coordinate mapping of the field of view can be calculated. Complex distortions can be corrected in the process. Using the resulting internal and external camera parameters, the camera’s image coordinates are transformed into world coordinates, making them accessible to the user.

MVTec’s calibration allows subpixel measurements down to 1 µm in a 10 mm field of view – even with line scan cameras. HALCON’s hand-eye calibration is essential for any application involving robots. Additionally, HALCON supports calibration for Scheimpflug optics and hand-eye calibration for SCARA robots.

Calibration Plates

MVTec offers precisely crafted calibration plates for its customers. These plates are essential for accurately calibrating an imaging setup. MVTec's calibration plates are available in various materials and sizes, ranging from 2cm×2cm to 320mm×240mm.

Your customer advisor will be happy to assist you in selecting the right calibration plate for your application. If you do not have a contact person, please reach out to one of our sales partners in your region. Calibration plates are available exclusively to MVTec Software customers.
